What are Ancient Grains?

As the name implies, ancient grains have been around a long time. Dating back thousands of years, the grains used in Yogi Cereal and Granola Crisps were the primary sustenance for early civilizations. Ancient grains have remained virtually untouched by modern plant science and are often a richer source of nutrients than modern grains.

The modern Western diet is based on corn, rice, wheat and soy. In fact, wheat is the most commonly consumed food in USA. Consuming a variety of ancient grains brings diversity and unique health benefits to the diet.

Every cereal from Yogi contains our exclusive blend of five ancient whole grains:

Nutritious Oats contain soluble fiber that helps support a healthy heart.

With its mild nutty flavor, Barley is a natural source of antioxidants and helps reduce free radicals. Barley is also rich in complex carbohydrates and contains more total fiber than oats.

An ancient form of wheat, Spelt is higher in protein than modern wheat. It is also rich in complex carbohydrates, fiber, minerals, and vitamins B1 and B2.

Delicately-flavored Quinoa was referred to as the "mother of all grains" by the Incas of the Andean region of South America. Quinoa helps sustain energy and promote vitality.

Amaranth is one of the earliest known food plants. It is indigenous to the western hemisphere and was cultivated by the Aztecs. Amaranth contains vitamin E for a healthy circulatory system.

Whole Grain Benefits

When you choose whole grains, you get vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (healthful plant compounds) that work together to enhance the body's ability to ward off disease. Low fat diets rich in whole grains may help lower your risk of heart disease. Emerging research also suggests that whole grains may also reduce the risk of diabetes.

The Whole Grains Council recommends eating 48 grams or more of whole grains daily. One serving of Yogi Granola Crisps provides 20 grams of your daily total, and one serving of Yogi Cereal provides anywhere from 29 to 31 grams per serving!
