The Doshas and Interior Design

Interior

The doshas affect every facet of our lives, including areas as esoteric as home decor.

Environments definitely have an impact on our health and mental balance, and people of different constitutions definitely prefer specific environments.

All too often, what happens, of course, is that we create an environment that seems comfortable and familiar, but which causes the dominant dosha to become even more exaggerated.

What we need to do is consciously create an environment that helps to bring us into balance, which will often seem a little uncomfortable at first, but which will eventually create a zone of balance, ease and health.

Here are examples of what the doshas may be attracted to in their homes:
Mr. Vata- wild, clashing, exotic artworks and constantly changing stimulation
Ms. Pitta- loud, crowded parties with aggressive mind games and intense personal competition
Mr. Kapha- a double wide recliner and a tub o' ice cream

What they SHOULD have to promote healthy balance:

Mr. Vata
Relaxing, slow lifestyle space
Cozy, homey, quiet, tranquil respite from the stressful world outside
Warm bed with a thick blanket and a hot water bottle
Gold colored furnishings
Silk fabric
Soft light, quiet sound and low volume calming music
Flowers in deep, rich colors
Aromas
• Geranium
• Juniper
• Lavender
• Myrrh
• Patchouli
• Sage
• Basil

Ms. Pitta
Cool, open, luxurious, elegant surroundings
A bed with lightweight sheets and a cool eye pillow
Light blue and silver furnishings
Green plants
Sweet smelling flowers, especially white or pink roses
Aromas
• Gardenia
• Jasmine
• Lavender
• Lotus
• Rose
• Sandalwood
• Vetivert

Mr. Kapha
Warm, stimulating, exciting, lively environment
Bed with red sheets and bright colors
Light wool fabrics
Vessels and sculpture in copper
Bold, bright flowers in red or orange
Aromas
• Basil
• Camphor
• Eucalyptus
• Frankincense
• Lemon
• Peppermint
• Rosemary
• Sage

What are you doing to balance your doshas in your home? Have you noticed a positive different when you fight your initial instincts in creating your living space, or the opposite?
