News Update: Yoga Regulation on Path to Defeat in New York

Last year I blogged about a move by several states to regulate yoga teacher training programs as vocational schools.

Well, it turns out that yoga teachers are a bit feistier than anyone suspected. They got off their mats, got organized and fought back against what many thought was overdone government intrusion.

At least in New York state, their efforts paid off.

State Senator Eric T. Schneiderman, a Manhattan Democrat, who sponsored the bill to kill the regulations said, It’s a personal-enrichment and spiritual practice. It’s not something that really cries out for more regulation.

It does seem like the states might have been overreacting a bit with the effort to license Yoga instructors. Still, yoga is growing up in America, and we’ll probably be seeing more moves to bring it into the legal and social mainstream in the next few years.

I know many of you are interested in yoga. Do any of you live in one of the newly regulated states? What’s your take on this idea?
